What is all the fuss about; green cleaners? Green cleaners are environmentally safe cleaners. They are not usually the color green. Green just means biodegradable.

The word Green used like this was not in the dictionary it is said, until about 1970 or so. Before that, it was just a word those crazy people used who loved the earth.

Why Should I Care?

If you look at some of the facts you will see that you should be going Green even if you are not into the environmental thing.

  • The most common poison exposure for kids is ingesting household products (ie the cleaners under the sink or Clorox)
  • Chlorine is the #1 cause of child poisonings in the US
  • There are 150 different chemicals in people's homes are associated with allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological disorders.
  • 90% of all Toxic Hazards are caused by breathing vapors and absorption of hazardous particles through the skin.
  • There has been a dramatic increase in the rate of asthma in women in the past 10 years due to longer exposure times to household chemicals.
  • 90% of all poison exposures occur in the home.
  • 12.2 billion dollars are spent annually on health care costs for women due to environmentally associated diseases
  • Most people use a variety of cleaning products, many of which contain toxic chemicals.
  • Chlorine bleach is potentially carcinogenic and can damage the respiratory system. Among its by-products are chlorinated hydrocarbons, chloroform and trihalo -methanes, all of which act like weak estrogens and cause breast cells to divide more rapidly; as stated by Mitchell Gayor, MD, of Cornell University. These by products have been shown to cause breast tumors in animals.

If you read the warning labels on most household cleaners you will find the ingredients include corrosives, ammonia, bleach, phosphates, and petroleum, and all pose a variety of threats to our health.

According to the book, The Safe Shoppers Bible, there is a long list of common household products that contain known carcinogens and/or neurotoxins.

  • Carcinogens are chemicals that cause cancer.
  • Neurotoxins are chemicals that adversely affect the nervous system reducing emotional well being, mental alertness, coordination and other functions associated with intelligence.

There are more than 3 million poisonings every year. Household cleaners are the number one cause of poisoning for children. The top three culprits according to Poison Control: Household cleaners, bleach and medications.

A well known dishwashing detergent is the #1 cause of accidental poisoning. Another well known laundry detergent contains lye and is the #1 polluter. Deet, an ingredient in mosquito repellents causes seizures in children and adults.

Do you think the major products you buy at the local grocery store are safe?

WRONG!

Phenols and dioxin (Agent Orange) is in a trusted brand of disinfectant.

Just because a product has been used for years does not mean it is safe. (read more about toxins and the products they are found in)

That is part of the problem, we, as individuals, are not taking responsibility for our earth.

We are pulled in by the great advertising of companies.

What do we really want?

I want a cleaner that gives me what I pay for; it is concentrated and has been clinically proven to be an environmentally safe cleaner.

and Yes, there are cleaners such as these.

If we plan to work toward a better tomorrow for ourselves and our children, don’t we want a cleaner that is packaged in recyclable containers? This type of cleaner would keep hundreds of pounds of packaging waste out of landfills and eliminate hundreds or more pounds of greenhouse gas; compared to the regular over the counter products.

A good environmentally safe cleaner is also concentrated. Not only do we save Mother Nature, but we also save money.

Shouldn’t we feel our homes are the safest places we can possibly be?

It has been shown by the EPA that women who are fortunate enough to be able to stay at home are also women who tend to be sick, due to household cleaners. Children are closer to the floor thus they too get to breathe in all those great contaminants. Our pets get to walk on the toxic cleaners, in the carpet, on the floors and possibly outside where the water is thrown out after mopping the floor. Some animals may even drink the contaminated cleaning water.

Can you safely put the oven cleaner you use on a sponge and not burn your senses, smelling, seeing, and the skin all at once?

It all comes down to; we must do something now to help ourselves and Mother Nature. One of the best ways to do this is to use an environmentally safe cleaner.
